1962. Zwei Jahre nach dem Tod von Patrice Lumumba besucht ein haitianisches Kind seine Eltern, die als Entwicklungshelfer im Kongo arbeiten. Ausgehend von einem Foto Lumumbas, das seine Mutter gefunden hat, dreht Raoul Peck 30 Jahre später einen sehr persönlichen Film aus Zeugenaussagen und Archivmaterial, um dem Erbe des legendären Anführers der kongolesischen Unabhängigkeit und seiner politischen Ermordung nachzugehen.
