Jules Guarneri grew up in Villars, with two adopted siblings, in a chalet haunted by the ghost of his mother who died when he was 20, and where his solitary father still lives; the latter presents him one day with his filmed diary. A cumbersome gift that the “filmographer” uses to make it resonate with his own images, thus forging his own emancipating path towards adulthood.

Jules Guarneri grew up on “La Belle Poule” – a large family property on the hills of Villars, bearing the nickname of his mother who died when he was 20 – with his brother Oskar, who talks to the spirits when taking a bath, and his eternally uprooted sister Iwa, both adopted in Colombia; Pura, the loyal housekeeper who manages the house; the ghost of Cristabel, photos of whom, in varying states of undress, adorn the bedroom of Jean, who has led a life of idleness alongside his heiress wife. The pater familias, a dilettante nevertheless concerned with maintaining some sort of control over his three children, gifts Jules a chalet... and over 20 hours of his filmed diary. A slightly cumbersome gift that the “filmographer” tackles to make resonate with his own images. Ultimately, Le Film de mon père will not be so much the father’s film, as the son casts an empathetic and reflective look at this somewhat neurotic family material, which he reclaims for himself and whittles at the editing table. Recurring shots of the filmmaker at work suggest the symbolic murder of the father and the path of emancipation.
