At Averroès and Rosa Parks, psychiatric wards in a Paris hospital, carers and patients interact and listen to each other. A unique place of dialogue, their consultations bear witness to a shared quest for meaning and dignity. After Sur L’Adamant (Golden Bear, 2023 Berlinale), this second chapter in Nicolas Philibert’s triptych on mental health delves into the human soul in all its vulnerability.

More than 25 years after La Moindre des choses, his first exploration of the subject shot at the clinic of La Borde, and after Sur L’Adamant (Golden Bear at the Berlinale 2023 and VdR 2023), Nicolas Philibert continues his investigation of psychiatry. The second chapter of a triptych (whose third opus is forthcoming), Averroès & Rosa Parks was shot in two units of the Esquirol hospital in Saint-Maurice in the region of Paris, previously named “asile de Charenton”. While the Adamant boat naturally offered moments of respite - by way of its architecture, its activities, its rhythm - the filmmaker’s new feature plunges us into the heart and harshness of the psychiatric apparatus, between the four walls of an enclosed space. Some of the patients we met on the Adamant make an appearance, as does Philibert’s radically simple approach, which concentrates attention on his protagonists’ words : mostly medium shots, filmed at the right height, without voyeurism and with deep humanity. In this unique place of dialogue, the consultations bear witness to a common quest for meaning and dignity, as Nicolas Philibert delves into the human soul and its vulnerability.
