The American West. A world where human life seems to be impossible. An arid, mythical landscape characterized by the absence of water. But then traces start to appear and the film becomes a peculiar portrait of America, between present and past, myth and reality. Astronauts preparing for future missions to Mars, Japanese country singers, military archeologists, and many other forms of life.

Astronauts preparing for future missions to Mars, Japanese country singers, military archeologists, and many other forms of life. The third journey of Sophie Benoot in the United States, after Fronterismo (2007) and Blue Meridian (2010) is a documentary western. Shot across Wyoming, Nevada, Utah and California, Desert Haze focuses on the American dream, on how it evolved and transformed. The iconic landscape and the apparent emptiness of the desert provide a paradoxically fertile terrain where stories can grow. Every square meter of the “west” is now well known, but Desert Haze seems to approach its subject exactly like the pioneers did and keeps exploring the frontier, the one between imaginary and reality. And yes, it’s a western, which means John Wayne might be involved.
