In Mongolia’s remote and harsh Tsakhir Valley, 18-year-old Batbold faces the greatest challenge of his young life: safeguarding 1,000 horses during the deadliest winter on record. With the future of his community at stake, he grapples with self-doubt, living in the shadow of his seasoned father, Bayankhangai, who hopes Batbold will take over his role, thereby honouring their herding legacy. During this incredible expedition, as fierce storms and wolf attacks threaten the herd, Batbold finds strength in his bond with Tsaaganna, his charismatic friend and fellow herder. In this pivotal moment, Batbold must choose: uphold the values that define his culture, or abandon them for the lure of a simpler and more appealing life in the city.
Director Kasimir Burgess spent months in extreme conditions, in temperatures of minus fifty degrees Celsius, in order to develop a meaningful collaboration with the young herders. He has crafted an epic, spectacular and chilling film about survival, which slowly transforms into a personal and poignant coming-of-age tale about friendship, sacrifice, and the struggle to maintain one’s identity amidst change.
