Mr. B. used to work for the Stasi (Ministerium für Staatssicherheit), the official state security service of the German Democratic Republic. He believed in the motivations of his job. And he worked hard day and night sacrificing everything to his task. But even though Mr. S. was supposed to watch out for any suspicious counterrevolutionary activities, when the revolution finally struck, he did not see it coming.
Mr. B. used to work for the Stasi (Ministerium für Staatssicherheit), the official state security service of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). He believed in the motivations of his job and worked hard day and night sacrificing everything to his work. He wanted to be a model citizen. He did his job out of love for his country and his fellow citizens. He knew that if he faltered, the whole idea of East German socialism would crumble at the feet of the capitalistic Moloch that was waiting at the other side of the wall. Therefore, Mr. B. put some extra efforts in spying and controlling his comrades and co-citizens. But at the end of 1989 the wall came down and the people stormed in the Stasi offices. Even though Mr. B. was supposed to watch out for any suspicious counterrevolutionary activities, when the revolution finally struck he did not see it coming. Aus Liebe zum Volk is a film that questions the notion of the film frame as a form of censorship and the ideology of surveillance as propaganda. “This is my film against cinema”, states Eyal Sivan. Rightly so.
