As populist rhetoric rages in the global political arena — taking particular aim at gender identity and reproductive rights — Italy, one of the countries most fraught with these tensions, harbours an exception: a public hospital discreetly at the forefront of fertility and transition medicine. Before the extroverted Dr Maurizio Bini –a superhero expert in hormone treatments disguised as an ordinary civil servant – a merry-go-round of humanity unfolds, exposed at the moment of maximum fragility, when a choice, diagnosis and therapy can make or break a new life: with a different sex, with a larger family.
The clinic becomes a safe space where the right to care is asserted and where patients, protected from the prejudice even of their loved ones and from increasingly repressive laws, share their deepest fears and hopes. Gianluca Matarrese could not have wished for more: the level of intimacy he captures — which often takes documentary filmmakers years to earn — is granted by the trust the patients place in his protagonist, at once hero and sidekick because here, it is undoubtedly the supporting roles which steal both show and hearts.
