After surviving ISIS prisons as a child, Rashid has been reunited with his family in Sinjar, northwestern Iraq. Now a teenager, the young Yazidi dreams of a brighter future. But peace is fragile, and hatred against his community is resurfacing. On the threshold of adulthood, Rashid must reinvent himself amid daily disruptions, while wondering whether to leave or stay.
Silence, and ruins stretching as far as the eye can see. This is how we enter Sinjar, a martyred city under Daesh and the historic homeland of the Yezidis in Iraq. Amid this apocalyptic landscape, 15-year-old Rashid tries to leave behind the trauma that has marked his short life: the wave of violence unleashed by Islamist fighters on his community during which his grandfather was shot dead, his sister Raishin disappeared, his community deported.
“The genocide began on the day of the feast that marks the end of the fast. But we children didn’t understand right away,” Rashid explains in one of the rare moments when he opens up. For a time, carried by the love of his family, the teenager finds some calm, determined to live up to his role as the eldest. But as the months pass and his body begins to change, Rashid grows increasingly silent. Through his gaze, his gestures and his silences, we feel his struggle simply to exist, and to dream, surrounded by the ghosts of both the living and the dead. A poignant portrait of a boy in search of himself and his place in a world where the hatreds of the past are once more rising to the surface.
