The Prince of Nanawa

On a pedestrian bridge separating Argentina from Paraguay, all sorts of products are transported and traded, in a constant mix of Spanish and Guarani. Clarisa Navas finds herself there one day to report a story, and meets nine-year-old Ángel, who exhibits an unrivalled wit and a real vision for his small Paraguayan community of Nanawa and for the preservation of its Guarani language. Clarisa and her team embark on a whirlwind film with Ángel that will span almost ten years, becoming real family members and confidants to the young prince full of desire and hungry for change. Equipped with a camera, the daily routine becomes an intimate document of the young boy's metamorphosis. From the construction of his identity to the discovery of love, and the plunge into the local economic reality, Ángel is overtaken by social determinism and his dreams give way to survival. Yet the young man seems to retain that spark of the nine-year-old for whom nothing is inevitable.
It's a rare, long-term work, crafted with tenderness, kindness and a great deal of lucidity.
