A former worker and two homeless Romanians live there in the direst poverty, living out their destiny like characters in a Beckett play. A poignant “documentary piece” on the extinction of the working class and its tragic human consequences.
The Fiat Grandi Motori factory in Turin, once the flagship of local industry employing thousands of workers, is now no more than a ghost ship. It is soon to be demolished. In the recesses of its immense deserted halls, Andrei and Mihai, a pair of homeless Romanians, and Gica, a former factory worker, live in the direst poverty. As in a Beckett play, they live out their destiny in the improbable hope of better days. But the days of full employment and aggressive collective bargaining are a distant memory: a golden age, relegated to the archives images that seem to haunt the premises. For these modern castaways, it is a time of despair. “Maybe this is the end of the world”, says one of them, while the other appeals to God. In framing its shots, the camera zooms in on their faces, the better to record the depths of their distress, symbolically relocating these men without prospects in the desolation of the surrounding ruins. A poignant, politically committed film on the extinction of the working classes and the tragic human consequences.
