Wine Country explores cultural and spiritual ties to landscape through an unconventional portrait of a region heavily loaded with American symbolism: Napa Valley, the agricultural and touristic paradise of the United States. This film tells the less-often told story of movement and migration that has shaped American viticulture. An unscripted audio recording of the director’s father foregrounds the wisdom of Mexican migrant workers who labour to maintain the American wine industry. Architecture, plant life, and the landscape itself are all more hybrid than they first appear, and contain local, transnational, and embodied histories.
Wine Country will be exhibited at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia as part of the ‘Intelligens:CANON’ exhibition, which presents significant new works of art responding to architecture amidst the climate crisis.
