Alice Diop returns to the council estate where she grew up, la Rose-des-Vents, to paint a portrait of the inhabitants of her old building. Outpourings in the intimacy of apartments, the stairwell where different cultures meet, and the outside areas, veritable playgrounds, together form the rich heritage of this neighbourhood. A counterpoint to the usual media coverage.

For several decades, the Rose-des-Vents housing estate in Seine-Saint-Denis has been home to communities from all over the world. It is to this 'kingdom' – between high-rise towers, playgrounds and an open-air market – that Alice Diop returns, some fifteen years after growing up there, to capture the day-to-day life of a banlieue, far removed from the clichés circulated by the media. Carrying her camera from floor to floor in the building where she grew up, the filmmaker meets Emine, Raja, Aissa and Tino, and their families. The hustle and bustle of life in the community's streets and urban spaces gives way to portraits of the residents, and their homes filled with colour and precious objects. Moving between outdoor and indoor spaces, this intimate exploration captures all the richness of the place, and of the cultures which intersect there. The filmmaker's own memories become interwoven with the stories she has gathered, forming a vibrant tapestry of local life.
