Colostrum

In the dazzling landscape of a Swiss alpine pasture, Pascal tends the family farm alone, ever since the passing of his father and brother. His days are shaped by the rhythm of milking his thirty or so cherished cows—each with her own story, personality, and name. As he does every year, Pascal welcomes a seasonal farm volunteer to help with the daily tasks. This time, it's Solène—a sensitive thirty-something from the city, attuned to animal welfare and ecofeminist values—who will spend several weeks with him in close, solitary company. In this time seemingly suspended from the world, the two gradually come to understand one another’s ways of thinking, finding a shared rhythm amidst the raw elements. In this ode to the alpine pasture, director Sayaka Mizuno observes with great care an environment where humility is essential, and where two souls gently navigate their differences to devote themselves fully to their care of, and affection for, the cows. Traditional farming here becomes an art form, where gestures are sacred and the cows reign supreme.
