A pie in the face is as old as cinema itself. In this essay, an ode to activism, Sasha Pirker pays tribute to the original pie-thrower Mabel Normand, the pioneering Alice Guy Blaché, the illustrious ballerina Anna Pavlova and her eponymous confections… A thrilling surrealist collage which celebrates the subversive nature of cinema and calls us to action.
A pie in the face is as old as cinema itself. In Everyone Deserves a Slice of the Pie, Sasha Pirker crafts a surreal, burlesque collage that celebrates cinema’s subversive spirit—and a gesture that has grown increasingly political over time. Blending silent slapstick, early talkies, and amateur footage, the film pays tribute not only to Mabel Normand, the first credited pie-thrower, but also to cinema trailblazer Alice Guy Blaché and the iconic ballerina Anna Pavlova’s eponymous pastry-inspired confections. Both a clever manifesto and an ode to civil disobedience, Everyone Deserves a Slice of the Pie catapults the cream pie from the world of fiction into the realm of reality. Pirker draws from a plethora of sources, conjuring legendary pie-ings captured for posterity thanks to the democratisation of cameras, alongside a string of imagined pastry assaults, made possible through the playful alchemy of cinema. Joyful, irreverent, and wickedly satisfying, this film indulges our most mischievous fantasies, all while offering a few useful tips…
