It is early morning in a Montreal diner: filter coffee, bacon, French toast. Stories are exchanged, solitudes are shared for a while. Silences fall, glances are exchanged. Encounters signal the promise of a brand-new day. This restaurant and refuge, into which the chaos of the world still finds a way in, is tenderly portrayed with love for its characters.
At the Corvette and Nouveau Canada Hot-Dog, two old-school diners in Montreal, a cup of filter coffee never sits empty for long: the waitresses make sure of that. For breakfast (or déjeuner, as they say in Quebec), it’s French toast, eggs, and bacon. “Back in the day, it was easy to find a spot in Montreal where you could get eggs and bacon,” Denise recalls. “Now (...) it’s all cafés like the one I went to yesterday on avenue du Parc. Croissants and muffins, that’s it. Forget the eggs and bacon. The place I went yesterday — it was snooty.” Through quiet, fragmentary encounters with the regulars of these fading diners, Jean-Baptiste Mees sketches tender portraits in which each person has a story, and something to share: a few words, a slice of cake. Between the lines, the film hints at the slow disappearance of these welcoming, affordable spaces — places that offer opportunities for social connection, gently chipping away at loneliness. Shot on film, it lovingly preserves a vanishing world, with tenderness and deep affection for its characters.
