“Capital has won,” Raoul Peck wryly asserts at the start of this Marxian essay, which pits the financial capitalism of the early 2000s against Haitian reality. In front of the camera appear market economy specialists, a New York garbage collector and merchants from Port-à-Piment. The voice-over dissects, analyzes and connects. A film that remains as modern as ever!
“I come from a country that theoretically does not exist,” declares Raoul Peck at the outset of this Marxian essay. As dawn breaks over Port-à-Piment, Haiti, to the meditative strains of Abdullah Ibrahim's jazz, the voiceover continues: “Capital has won. It has convinced its adversaries that their failure is part of the natural order of things.” At the turn of the 2000s, the filmmaker sets out to examine the corrosive impact of financial neoliberalism on societies. He engages in conversation with European sociologists and Keynesian economists, whose insights are interwoven with contemplative images of his native island and the voices of fishermen, farmers, an agronomist, a New York garbage collector, and ordinary citizens. The film’s polemical edge never comes at the expense of critical clarity—and it is tempered by a poetic sensibility that at times gives way to more personal reflections, including on the marginal utility of making films. Le Profit et rien d’autre ! lives up to its subtitle: these Reflections on the Class Struggle will seem “excessive” only to the most fervent devotees of an ideology now sliding ever further into dangerous radicalisation.
