Les Recommencements

It is autumn in Northern California. As they have for millennia, the salmon return from the ocean, and the Yurok people wait for them at the mouth of the Klamath River. But this year, on the boats, the only talk is of the river’s sickness, the fish growing scarce. Al Moon stands among them, but his mind is elsewhere. He drifts toward the journey he has put off time and again—one he is now determined to take. The old man longs to reunite with his brothers-in-arms, fellow Vietnam veterans. He knows that crossing the country alone will stir buried wounds, awaken ghosts that have never truly left him. “The past clings hardest when you try to outrun it,” reflects Al. So he chooses to face it, hoping at last to open new possibilities.
With quiet grace, Les Recommencements traces the journey of a man who has built himself in defiance of the roles imposed upon him—those of his own history and of a nation shaped, from its very origins, by violence. Katy Léna Ndiaye
