From his prison cell in Texas, Mabry, sentenced to death, imagines the final journey that will one day take him to Walls Unit, the place of his execution, 60 kilometres away. A stretch of road, along which live people whose existence is linked to the prison institution; those same who might one day witness Mabry go by, seated in the back of a van.
Huntsville, Texas. A small rural town set along Route 190, in the heart of white, conservative America. The day is drawing to a close. In one of the seven prisons scattered across the city, a siren blares: it's time for the inmate count. Nicknamed the Death Capital, the town is home to all of the county’s executions. Mabry is on death row. He knows it: his final journey will lead him to Huntsville. While waiting for that fateful hour, he opens up. He unravels the thread of his life — from moments of happiness to the first missteps, a slow slide into endemic violence, shaped by his environment and by American society itself. Beneath his prison uniform, his heavily muscled body contrasts sharply with the gentleness of his voice. Through his words, we glimpse the inner journey of a man for whom death is no longer a possibility, but a certainty. A man still standing, still fighting, in spite of everything. Without resorting to black and white judgments, Road 190 confronts us with the stark brutality of a system that still allows capital punishment.
