"Shuruuk" literally means "rising in the east". Composed of fragments filmed over a period of five years, this dreamlike travelogue follows the arc of the sun, from Japan to Tunisia and from Palestine to France. Centred on the Roma community, Amie Barouh’s film shines a light on an existence made up of perpetual, often violent, reconfiguration.
In the ruins of a house in the suburbs, a Roma family creates a temporary home, captured by Amie Barouh’s camera. The contrails of an airplane streak across the sky, transporting us to the heart of a vibrant parade in Okinawa, before settling with a beekeeper in Ariège. The collision of time and space forms the core of this new film by Amie Barouh (Je peux changer mais pas à 100%, VdR 2019). The Franco-Japanese artist filmed these biographical fragments between 2018 and 2024, assembling them into a cinematic journal, crafted during her travels, primarily with Roma friends with whom she has lived. Separating sound from image, this visceral montage follows the course of the sun — “Shuruuk,” which literally means “rising in the east” — from Japan to Tunisia, passing through Palestine and the Parisian suburbs. With both grace and gravity, the filmmaker sweeps us into this vibrant whirlwind, an abstract portrait that reflects the impermanence of things, while echoing the daily struggle of those confronting various forms of state oppression, as they fight to carve out their survival in the shadows of the world.
