En parcourant ses vieilles cassettes VHS, Nora Rosenthal, ancienne danseuse, se rend compte que beaucoup de chapitres de son histoire familiale n’ont pas été capturés et se met en tête de créer les archives de ces instants manquants, « au cas où nous aurions besoin de preuves de qui nous avons été ». Elle engage donc une équipe de cinéma et… ses parents, pour ce qui devrait être une grande chorégraphie de la vie. Mais lorsque son père, pourtant acteur, se révèle mauvais, et que le cancer de sa mère s’aggrave, Nora est obligée de remplacer ses parents. Les vrais inspirent les faux, la rencontre est magique, une nouvelle réalité se crée, mais peut-on vraiment réinventer les rôles ? Et comment se préparer ensemble au deuil ? Avec autant d’idées que d’humour, la réalisatrice nous embarque dans la fictionnalisation de sa famille alors que celle-ci est en train de disparaître, nous interrogeant ainsi sur la perte, la transformation et l’importance des traces. Browsing through her old VHS tapes, Nora Rosenthal, a former dancer, realises that many chapters of her family history have not been recorded, and sets out to create an archive of these missing moments – « in case we need proof of who we once were ». She hires a film crew – and recruits her parents – for what should be a great choreography of life. But when her actor father turns out to be a ham, and her mother’s cancer worsens, Nora is forced to replace her parents. The real parents inspire the fake parents, the encounter is magical, and a new reality is created, but can roles really be reinvented? And how can bereavement be prepared for, together? With humour and an abundance of ideas, the director takes us on the journey of fictionalising her family while it is disappearing, exploring the importance of loss, transformation, and the importance of what we leave behind.
